Big Shift in Interest for New Homes

NAHB’s latest Housing Trends Report shows that in the final quarter of 2020, 41% of prospective buyers were looking for a newly-built home — more than twice the 19% share registered a year earlier. Conversely, the share interested in an existing home declined from 40% to 30%, while the share indifferent to either type of home fell from 41% to 29%.

COVID-19 Continues to Impact Home Purchasing Plans

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, more Americans are interested in purchasing homes, according to NAHB’s latest Housing Trends Report. The share of Americans who are considering the purchase of a home in the next 12 months was 15% in the fourth quarter of 2020, four percentage points higher than a year earlier and the largest year-over-year gain in the three-year history of this series.

Multiple Offers for Homes on the Market are Becoming More Common

In a sign that the inventory of for-sale homes remains tight, NAHB’s quarterly Housing Trends Report reveals that more buyers are finding their home search delayed because of a rising number of multiple offers on the same property. The survey found 30% of active buyers reported getting outbid by another buyer in the second quarter of 2020, significantly higher than the comparable 18% share a year earlier.
