Residential Construction Inputs Higher Amid Record Material and Service Prices

According to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the prices of goods used in residential construction ex-energy climbed 1.8% in November (not seasonally adjusted). Meanwhile, the price index of services inputs to residential construction decreased 0.8% in November, continuing a four-month trend during which the index has declined 10.1%.

Materials Prices Post Record Year-to-Date Increase

The softwood lumber price index increased 9.1% in October (seasonally adjusted) — its first monthly increase since May, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report. Overall, building material prices have increased 12.2% year to date, after climbing 4.5% over the same period in 2020.

Building Material Prices Post Record Monthly Decline in April

Prices paid for goods used in residential construction decreased 4.1% in April (not seasonally adjusted) — the largest monthly decline on record — according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The year-to-date decline (-5.4%) in residential construction inputs prices is more than three times larger than the previous record (-1.3% in 2009).

Building Materials Prices Rise in February

The cost of building homes is going up.

The latest Producer Price Index release by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that prices of softwood lumber, gypsum, ready-mix concrete and OSB all rose in February. The increases were led by gypsum products, with softwood lumber a close second.
