Maintaining a safe and clean worksite has become even more important since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak. One thing we can all agree on is that by adjusting cleanliness standards to create a more hygienic environment, we create a safer workplace for all...and it starts in the bathroom.

For years we have settled for cleaning the portable restrooms on job sites just once a week and not offering easy access for hand washing. But once-a-week bathroom cleaning is no longer good enough. The impact germs can have on the world around us has become painfully clear; it’s time to set a new standard.

How many portable restrooms should be on your job site?

Current OSHA guidelines require one portable restroom for every 10 workers. However, since the start of the COVD-19 pandemic, the Portable Sanitation Association International, and many leading builders, have updated the standard to at least one restroom toilet for every eight workers. Portable restrooms should be spaced to accommodate social distancing and avoid creating lines or choke points.

Did you know porta potties CAN be clean?

You just have to try. Historically porta potties have only been cleaned once per week.

At the office, your bathroom is cleaned daily and at a restaurant or retail outlet the bathrooms are cleaned multiple times throughout the day. Why should a portable restroom be so different? Now it’s time to set a new standard for porta potties.

How often should your portable restrooms be cleaned?

According to the Portable Sanitation Association International, which follows the guidance of the Center for Disease Control (CDC), portable restrooms should be cleaned by your service provider, at minimum, two times a week. Between cleanings, high-touch areas of each restroom unit should be disinfected at least three times a day using an EPA-approved hydrogen peroxide-based disinfectant solution.

Show your workers you care about their health and safety by elevating the standards for the portable restrooms on your site.
