NAHB Statement on NewDEAL Forum Housing Strategy

NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke issued the following statement after the NewDEAL Forum released its housing crisis strategy document for state, county and city leaders:

"NAHB commends the NewDEAL Forum's Renewing America Task Force for making housing a national priority and issuing a blueprint for state and local leaders to help renters and small business property owners who have been hurt by the coronavirus pandemic. The task force takes a common-sense approach by targeting rental assistance to tenants most economically impacted by the pandemic and calling for funds to be disbursed directly to landlords. This will keep tenants in their homes and ensure landlords can pay their mortgage, property taxes and employees and cleaning/maintenance services."

"Moreover, the task force understands that achieving a pre-pandemic status quo is not enough, which is why it supports increased funding to support the creation and maintenance of the nation's affordable housing stock. America was suffering a housing affordability crisis before the outbreak, and we strongly support the task force's recommendations to reduce regulatory barriers, streamline the permitting process and ensure zoning and construction decisions take affordability into account. Putting these policies in place will help the nation's home builders to supply much-needed housing across the land."
