Chemicals such as glues, solvents, paints and pressurized gases are commonly used in the home building process. But they can be hazardous to individuals when not used properly.

More than 32 million American workers are exposed to hazardous chemicals in the workplace. OSHA estimates that nearly 650,000 different types of chemicals are present in close to 3 million workplaces. According to the National Safety Council, harmful substances and chemicals in the workplace contributed to 37,110 injuries and illnesses, and 531 fatalities in 2017 alone.

What should a worker do when exposed to hazardous chemicals? OSHA provides guidance on this topic on its website including chemical hazard recognition, controlling exposures, and worker education and training.

NAHB also has addressed the presence of chemicals in the home building industry in its most recent video toolbox talk, available in both English and Spanish on nahb.org. NAHB also focuses on the proper communication of chemical hazards, and how to recognize and heed important warnings.

Below is the Chemical Safety and Hazard Communication toolbox talk in English.
