Honoring a distinguished career in the systems-built housing industry, Buddy Hughes of Hughes Construction in North Carolina received the S.A. Walters Award at the Building Systems Housing Summit earlier this month. The award recognizes a lifetime of achievement in systems-built housing.

Named after the man who became the first chairman of what is known today as the Building Systems Councils (BSC), the S.A. Walters Award is the highest honor the councils bestow.

“It’s an honor to join the distinguished list of S.A. Walters Award recipients,” said Hughes. “I am truly grateful to my industry peers who selected me as this year’s honoree.”

Hughes is a longtime member of the BSC. In addition to serving as council chairman in 2016, he is currently in his sixth term on the BSC Board of Trustees.

Hughes was a key contributor to the BSC’s Building Systems for Soldiers project in North Carolina, where the council helped build a mortgage-free home for a wounded serviceman. The council’s point person on the project, Hughes was an essential part of the onsite construction team and helped secure a large quantity of donated material for the home.

In addition to his BSC leadership, Hughes has also served as chairman of NAHB’s National Area Chairman Committee, which oversees NAHB business on a regional level. He was first appointed a Special Voting Member to the NAHB Board of Trustees in 2006, where he’s also been named a Lifetime Director. Most recently, Hughes was selected as 2018 chairman of the Federation’s Conventions and Meetings Committee, where among other duties he serves an integral role in planning the International Builders’ Show.

When he isn’t making contributions to NAHB, Hughes works to advance the use of concrete in residential and commercial construction through his role as territory manager at Logix Insulated Concrete Forms. Through his work at Logix, Hughes was honored as the 2007 Richie Scott Industry Leadership Award winner by the Insulating Concrete Form Association.
