The New American Home 2017: Project in Full Swing

For The New American Home 2017, it’s not about “keeping up with the Joneses.” It’s about keeping up with the (Henrik) Stensons, the (Sergio) Garcias and the (Ian) Poulters – all of whom live on the same street and in the same golf-centric community as the TNAH 2017.

When any of these men – some of the world’s top professional golfers – want to pay their new neighbor a visit, it probably won’t be to borrow a cup of sugar.

No one will be pointing and laughing at your short-game skills here. A large, central courtyard of TNAH 2017 will be devoted to .

No one will be pointing and laughing at your short-game skills here. TNAH 2017 will feature a central courtyard with its own, private putting green.

It’s much more likely they’re interested in taking the state-of-the-art golf simulator for a spin, or working on their short game in the home’s central courtyard (aka, the private putting green).

Golf is certainly one of the themes of TNAH 2017, set for completion this fall, but according to its builder Phil Kean, principal of Phil Kean Design Group, “art is what defines this home.”

Whether it’s hung on the walls or permanently built into the structure, art will be seen throughout.

  • Gallery room. A light-filled walkway along the courtyard will offer ample wall space to display a variety of artwork.
  • Glass staircase. Custom-designed stairs made of frosted glass will be equally artistic as they are functional. A set of tall, linear panels that face the inside of the home will accentuate the LED lights illuminating each of the stairs, all of which will be visible from the home’s exterior through a 22-foot-tall glass stairwell wall.
  • Massive fireplace. An 8-foot-long, 6-foot-tall gas fireplace will provide a stunning focal point for the living room. The see-through design creates a unique element of separation between the living room and adjacent areas, without making the room feel closed off.

The home’s overall design can be considered a work of art as well. It gives a nod to the classic, sprawling, Palm Springs-style floor plan, yet takes a very modern approach to function and livability.

Defining the home as “multi-purpose” might be an understatement. The entire home is designed as an integrated system of pods that can be tailored to its occupants’ needs or preferences. It allows for different configurations of bedrooms, living rooms and entertainment spaces, as well as the ability to “turn off” whole sections of the home when not needed.

“[The home] is something that’s very different – I’ve never seen anything quite like it before,” said Kean, who also built TNAH 2012. “In the home building industry, architecture gets reinvented again and again. But even though this house is built for today’s lifestyles, its design and adaptability are geared for those of the next century as well.

“It’s been a fun project for us and we’re very excited for everyone to see the final product.”

See for Yourself

The principle goal of The New American Home program is to showcase a variety of innovative products and construction techniques that can be implemented within homes built in nearly any region and price range. Each year, millions of homes across the country incorporate many of the concepts – big and small – that debuted within The New American Home.

Those who attend the 2017 NAHB International Builders’ Show in Orlando will have the opportunity get a first-hand look at TNAH 2017, as well as visit the New American Remodeled Home 2017 (also located in the private, Lake Nona Golf and Country Club community). Guided tours of each home will be free to IBS registrants, as well as complimentary round-trip shuttle transportation between the homes and the Orange County Convention Center.

Registration for the 2017 Show opens Aug. 1, with exclusive savings and deals that are only offered during the month of August.

Gee Robert, do you suppose that NAHB just inadvertently left out information regarding the size of this “sustainable” demonstration home?

Maybe we can get them to share with us what the square footage comes in at?

      • NAHB Now says:

Thanks for your comment, Ron. As is typical for these types of show homes, a large floorplan is needed to accommodate the wide variety of new products. TNAH 2017 is no exception. The home will have a total of approximately 12,500 square feet. Yet, its projected HERS rating is -3. Many more blog posts on NAHBNow will be coming throughout the next several months with additional details.
