Shane McLendon, owner of Home Remedies in Jackson, Miss., is NAHB’s Remodeler of the Month for May.

Equipped with little more than a six-foot ladder, some basic tools and a 1987 Nissan Sentra, Shane McLendon founded Home Remedies in Jackson, Miss., in 2007.

He recalls in the early days of his business having to learn many lessons the hard way, but McLendon’s modest home repair service steadily grew once he realized how important it is to be selective about the quality of jobs he takes and the caliber of subs he hires.

“I have worked really hard to learn more and execute better,” McLendon said. “Trying to separate myself from other remodelers, I don’t [take on just any project]. I like unique projects that challenge my creativity.”

Having that type of winning strategy to differentiate his business is a big reason why McLendon has been recognized as NAHB’s Remodeler of the Month for May.

Surrounding himself with trustworthy employees and skilled subs is only part of his process. He also says he relies heavily on his suppliers and designers to help guide his decision making, and he’s built strong relationships with other remodelers in his market from whom he can glean expertise.

His business acumen has also been enhanced by his membership with NAHB. “It is a place where I have found mentors, encouragement and education that have helped me become a better person as well as businessman,” McLendon said.
