South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) receives the Hammer and Trowel Award from state HBA President Andy White.

Fried quail was on the menu and state luminaries in the seats March 15 when the HBA of South Carolina hosted the 46th annual Bird Supper.

The longest standing — and largest — event on the state’s legislative calendar, the Bird Supper gives home builders and other members of the business community a chance to network, trade stories and enjoy traditional Southern cooking.

Gov. Nikki Haley (R) was the guest of honor at this year’s event. HBASC President Andy White presented Haley with the association’s Hammer and Trowel Award, given each year to the person who has shown the greatest positive impact on the state’s housing industry that year.

“Governor Haley has been a close ally to the residential construction industry since 2004, and has been instrumental in passing legislation that promotes the residential building industry, and more importantly, home ownership for the citizens of South Carolina,” said Earl McLeod, EO of the BIA of Central South Carolina.

“She has been a staunch supporter of the home builder agenda and has been a leader on every environmental and land use issue for more than a decade,” he said.

NAHB CEO Jerry Howard also attended the event and thanked Haley for her efforts to promote the industry.

The Bird Supper was launched in 1970 when Columbia home builders and state officials gathered to shoot quail and fry it at the local armory. Today, it’s the largest political dinner in the state and, with a crowd that often tops 400 people, prepared by caterers. For additional information, contact the state HBA.
