HUD Publishes AFH Tool

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) marked New Year’s Eve with the Dec. 31 release of its Assessment of Fair Housing (AFH) tool in the Federal Register.

Local governments that receive CDBG, HOME or other block grant funding from HUD must use this tool to incorporate fair housing planning into broader community development decisions, as required under HUD’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.

There are 22 local governments scheduled to submit an AFH to HUD in 2016. Submission deadlines have been extended to Oct. 4.

Community participation is a required component of the AFH, and NAHB has provided a number of resources members can use to participate in public hearings or submit public comments when local governments begin soliciting input.

For more information about the community participation requirement and how builders can make their voices heard during this process, watch NAHB’s Dec. 17 webinar, HUD’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule: What Builders Need to Know. The webinar is free to NAHB members.
