Herbie the MascotThe Home Builders & Remodelers Association of Cape Cod has a new partner to help awareness of the association and connect with consumers both young and old: “spokesperson” Herbie the Home Builder.

“We realized our HBA logo was not known to the general public and to our members’ clients, so we wanted to make us more recognizable in a fun and approachable way,” said HBRACC executive officer Christine Duren.

“We also struggled finding a way to pass on to the public and the press the expertise of our members, and NAHB’s tips and trends, and finally determined we needed a figure or mascot that was memorable, easily identifiable and could represent all of our members. Voila, Herbie was created.”

The name Herbie comes from “H.B.” for Home Builder. “We found an illustrator who took our ideas and made them come to life. We also engaged our most recent high school student chapter members — all girls, by the way — to use their woodworking and painting expertise to create a life-size Herbie,” Duren said.

Life-size Herbie was put to work right away. “He made his debut at our First Annual Residential Construction Career Day, followed up by an appearance at our 65th anniversary celebration,” Duren said.

But Herbie is no fly-by-night, Chuck with a Truck. “We anticipate using Herbie for our blog, Facebook, and Twitter posts as well as a potential monthly newspaper column. We will bring Herbie to our children’s LEGO home-building challenge and other events,” Duren said.

“In time, we hope to introduce his father, H.B., as he will be passing on the company to Herbie, and Herbie’s daughter, who is in school on her way to being an architect. We think this will just another way for us to get the word out about our association and our members,” she said.
