auctionThe statistics are worrying: 10% of New Hampshire’s population are veterans, and an increasing number of them are disabled. The New Hampshire Home Builders Association (NHHBA) is ready to help them.

Its recently launched BuildersCare NH Foundation is sponsoring an auction to raise money to buy supplies and equipment so HBA members can make needed repairs and improvements to veterans’ homes.

The Hammers for Veterans Auction is now accepting donations and seeking sponsors, and items from Red Sox tickets to a brand new deck are already up for viewing on the website.

Bids will be accepted beginning March 9, while the live auction portion of the event takes place during the 48th annual New Hampshire State Home Show, March 13-15.

While members of the association have the expertise to provide construction services, the online auction will raise funds to assist in the purchase of materials, said New Hampshire EO Kendall Buck. The HBA is working with local veterans’ organizations to find people who need help.

“We heard about one individual who uses a wheelchair, and he cannot go home and visit his family because his family’s home has no wheelchair ramp,” Buck said. “I know there are organizations out there that build a home from the ground up, and they do a nice job of that, but there is also a real need for these services – ramps, door widening, repairs – and our members are very capable of providing them.”
