Careers in construction month bannerOctober is Careers in Construction Month, a month-long celebration of the rewarding and well-compensated career paths available in the home building industry.

This year brings an added urgency to workforce development in home building as demand for new homes is skyrocketing but home builders report marked labor shortages, at the same time as there are millions of Americans looking for work after the havoc wrecked on the economy by the coronavirus pandemic and shutdowns.

NAHB has created resources for HBAs and members to use in their recruiting efforts, including updated guidance that follows coronavirus safety protocols.

Some suggested activities for HBAs and builders during the month include:

  • Open Up Your Site, Virtually: Ask a local construction site to host a virtual field trip. Camera phones and drones are great tools for capturing the attention of any audience. Students will be able to gather first-hand information about what it takes to have a successful career in construction.
  • Equipment Demonstrations: Take five minutes to showcase how to use one or more tools or pieces of equipment on the job site. You can do a live, remote demonstration and/or record your video and post on social media with the tag #CareersInConstructionMonth.
  • Visit a Classroom: Zoom and other video conferencing programs make remote presentations or slideshows a breeze. Present the customizable Careers in the Construction Trades PowerPoint to local students. Also, access the Cheat Sheet for using the Careers in Construction Trades presentation.

Also, don’t forget about a special Careers in Construction Day on Tuesday, Oct. 13, a day of action on social media to highlight a day in the life of a professional in the home building industry. Builders, trades contractors, Associate members, office workers, business managers…everyone is encouraged to post a photo or video of themselves in their work space using the tag #CICDay2020.

Careers in Construction Month is starting to take off nationally. A number of states and municipalities have proclaimed October as Careers in Construction Month.
