Across the country, many great councils are making exceptional efforts to grow their membership. At the 2020 International Builders’ Show, some were recognized and awarded for their efforts in recruitment and retention.

The most noticeable trend across all the councils who had great membership recruitment efforts was the more effort the councils put into programs, education and networking, the greater the return was on membership, retention and member satisfaction. Here are just a few of the many successful councils nationwide that saw the greatest membership growth.

The Remodelers Council at the Greater Iowa City HBA was awarded the Council Award Demonstrating Remodeling Excellence (CADRE) in Membership Recruitment and Retention by NAHB Remodelers. Through regular social events, participation, marketing campaigns and a large member-recruiting campaign culminating in expanded council awareness, its council membership more than doubled in one year and was the fastest-growing Remodelers Council in the country. Its peak membership in 2017 was 73 members; by November 2019, its membership reached 225.

Professional Women in Building (PWB) Councils nationwide were also successful in growing membership through innovative ideas and programs. Notably, the HBA of Metro Denver PWB Council won the Outstanding Innovative Program Award for a large-sized council. It implemented a mentoring program to connect women and share ideas founded on measurable goals and outreach. At the conclusion of the program, alumnae participated in a panel discussion to share experiences, successes and suggestions. Through the great success of the program, the council experienced increased engagement of membership, higher retention and an enhanced membership experience.

The Triangle Sales and Marketing Council (SMC) of the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County won the SMC of the Year award at The Nationals 2020. For the second year in a row, it is the largest SMC in the country. In 2019, it retained 312 members and gained 147 new members. It was able to sustain and grow its already successful council through membership contests between companies, new member spotlights on social media, monthly breakfast programs, educational seminars for the council itself, as well as the NSMC, community service projects, BUILD-PAC fundraisers, and more,.
