New NAHB Resources on Opioids Include Podcast Episodes

NAHB recently rolled out additional resources for home builders, subcontractors and others in the industry to combat the national opioid epidemic.

These resources are key components of NAHB’s “Making it Your Business” campaign and include two new episodes of the podcast series, “A Constructive Response to the Opioid Epidemic.”

The podcast episodes are part of a set of supervisor training resources that focus on opioid misuse throughout the addiction cycle by providing guidance on preventing workplace injuries and drug use, steps to take to intervene when there are suspicions about a worker, and help developing policies and procedures for those in recovery to return to work.

These new resources complement those that were launched earlier this summer, as NAHB has been working on an industry-level response to the opioid crisis for more than a year.

Under the direction of NAHB Chairman Greg Ugalde, and working with partners the Job-Site Safety Institute and Advocates for Human Potential, Inc., NAHB convened a task force to study and address the issue. This resulted in the creation of resources catered specifically to help builders and subcontractors deal with opioid misuse.

The construction industry is one of the hardest hit by the opioid crisis. The physical demands of the job, combined with the financial incentive to work as much as possible, drive many to turn to opioids after an injury. This is often the beginning of the cycle of addiction for many.

The issue will persist long after it has left the national headlines. But with focused attention and the proper resources, NAHB hopes that home builders will feel they have somewhere to turn if a problem arises.
