First observed in 1980, Building Safety Month is an international campaign presented by the International Code Council and is celebrated in May to raise awareness about building safety.

Modern, regularly updated building codes and a strong system of code enforcement ensure that individuals and communities are safe in the buildings where they live, work and play. The campaign is supported by five core themes that will be highlighted throughout the month.

As a proud partner of Building Safety Month, NAHB is sponsoring a reception tonight in Washington to honor this week’s theme — Construction Professionals and Homeowners: Partners in Safety.

Code development is extremely important to the home building industry. The requirements established by national code bodies, the modifications made by state and local governments, and the standards set by national organizations that are used in developing the model codes can significantly affect the construction, configuration and cost of new residential buildings as well as remodeling or additions to existing ones.

Building codes can have a profound impact on the comfort and safety of residents as well as the cost of construction and the cost of operating the home. NAHB can help its members work toward cost-effective and safe codes.
