Talk to Your Workers about Safe Driving and the Dangers of Distraction

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a united effort to recognize the dangers of, and eliminate preventable deaths from, distracted driving spearheaded by the National Safety Council.

Every day, at least nine Americans die and 100 are injured in distracted driving crashes. Cell phones, dashboard touchscreens, voice commands and other in-vehicle technologies pose a threat to driving safety. Consequences of those distractions are not worth the convenience they offer.

Home builders can be susceptible to distracted driving as company owners, builders, workers and subcontractors travel between sites, often while communicating with others.

Employers have a responsibility to set policies that discourage cell phone, and other device, use while driving. And sometimes the solution can be quite simple. For example, if you know a person is in transit from one place to another, don’t call or text them unless there is a legitimate emergency.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has additional resources dedicated to motor vehicle safety at work.

NAHB also takes safe driving very seriously and has resources for home builders to promote safe driving, including the video toolbox talk below:
