Travis Blake is the NAHB Remodeler of the Month for February.

Recruiting the next generation of remodelers has been an ongoing focus for Travis Blake of Southern Maine Remodeling in Scarborough, Maine ever since he started his own business in 2012.

That focus led Blake to join advisory committees for a local community college and to support adult education programs dedicated to the construction trades. He is also working with local high schools to help promote vocational schools.

Blake’s passion for helping talented young adults find a path toward a remodeling career is one of the reasons he has been named the NAHB Remodeler of the Month for February.

Like many business owners, Blake knows how difficult it can be to find the right people to hire. He even started an apprenticeship program in an effort to jump start more careers for younger job seekers. But he admits workforce development is a tall task that requires much broader support across the industry.

“We are looking for the right people to show interest and trying to find the best ways to get them trained,” Blake said. “We have a long way to go, and it’s going to take larger contractors to step up and help with this process.”

What drives Blake the most is his love for the remodeling industry and the boundless opportunities it presents. “If we continue to create great experiences with our customers and continue to improve our communication through the process, [the hardest part] will be just finding more people to join the team to keep the customers happy.”
