Watch the Home Builders of the Future in Student Competition at IBS

Not only is the International Builders’ Show® (IBS) the largest annual light construction show in the world, it serves as a showcase for the next generation of home builders as hundreds of young people face off in the annual NAHB Student Competition.

Nearly 60 teams of students from high schools, trade schools, colleges and universities across the country will be competing this year, meaning many IBS attendees will have local schools in the competition.

The competition gives architecture and construction management students the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to the real world by completing a management project or proposal for a real project.

Proposals are submitted to a group of construction company executives who act as judges. During IBS, students defend their proposals to the judges in front of an audience.

The proposals are based on projects from real home builders and feature actual parcels of land.

For example, students in the four-year program competition were asked to develop a proposal to acquire and develop a 152-acre parcel in Oklahoma. Judges will be reviewing the proposals as a construction executive would, paying close attention to the market analysis, site design, cost estimate and schedule, site management and logistics, sales and marketing strategy, financial analysis, risk analysis, and sustainability.

The secondary programs competition is split into two tracks: architecture and construction management. Each track is tasked with creating a comprehensive plan, including drawings, for a specific home site in South Carolina.

The competition begins on Monday, Feb. 18, and the presentations will be made in the Westgate Resort convention space, directly adjacent to IBS. Come out and support your local team, or just watch the builders of the future creatively tackle real-world problems using realistic constraints. You might even learn something from these aspiring builders.
