Flood Insurance Program Extended Through Dec. 21

With a Dec. 7 partial government shutdown looming, the House and Senate today voted to approve a two-week extension to keep the full government running through Dec. 21. The continuing resolution passed by Congress will also keep the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) operating for the next two weeks.

A longer-term extension of NFIP will likely be tied to a continuing resolution that Congress must pass to keep the government open after Dec. 21.

Congress requires all properties within the 100-year floodplain that are purchased with a federally backed mortgage to carry flood insurance. So it is essential that authorization for the program does not lapse.

NAHB continues to work with Congress to achieve a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP that will keep the program fiscally sound and let builders provide safe and affordable housing.
