NAHB’s annual Professional Women in Building Week, Sept. 17-21, sparked a national focus on the contributions of women in the industry as HBAs around the country celebrated this special week. Here’s just a sampling of some local PWB councils’ activities:

Governor’s Proclamation in Iowa

Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a proclamation designating Professional Women in Building Week in Iowa. At the signing, the PWB council of the HBA of Greater Des Moines brought students from its all-female construction summer camp, PWB professionals from across the state, fellow female professionals from neighboring states, and young women of all ages in support of the council’s work in the industry.

PWB proclamation

“Our association has accomplished some big things over the past two years, but this is truly one of my proudest moments as EO,” said Dan Knoup, EO, HBA of Greater Des Moines. “The things this PWB group has accomplished in a short amount of time is unbelievable.”

Five Days of Giving in Pennsylvania

The PWB council of the HBA of Bucks & Montgomery Counties focused on raising money each day of the week for a different local Pennsylvania charity. The council also hosted a recruitment event at the Pennsylvania State PWB Chair’s farm house, and donated the funds raised for its local scholarship fund.

NAHB also highlighted opportunities for members to donate to the PWB Building Hope Scholarship Fund, which supports high school and college students pursuing education and careers within the building industry. You can donate throughout the year at nahb.org/buildinghope.

A Focus on Mentoring in California

The BIA Bay Area (Calif.) PWB council celebrated the week by encouraging members to pursue mentorship opportunities and promoting its membership and scholarship programs. The council sent daily emails, spotlighting young women who have been mentored by members of the council, and used social media to remind members of the many ways they can help support young women entering the industry.

We previously highlighted how the HBA of New Orleans teamed up with a local Girl Scout troop during PWB Week to restore and remodel a dilapidated cabin. Their efforts drew attention from a local TV station that featured their story. Working with young women in their communities is a trademark of local PWB councils around the country.

Mark your calendars for next year’s PWB Week, Sept. 16-20, and be sure to join in the national celebration of the vital role that women play in our industry.
