With a Nov. 30 deadline looming, the House and Senate tonight approved a one-week extension of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) until Dec. 7.

A longer-term extension of NFIP will likely be tied to a continuing resolution that Congress must pass to keep the government open after Dec. 7.

Congress requires all properties within the 100-year floodplain that are purchased with a federally backed mortgage to carry flood insurance. So it is essential that authorization for the program does not lapse.

NAHB continues to work with Congress to achieve a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP that will keep the program fiscally sound and let builders provide safe and affordable housing.

  1. I admonish our representatives to pass the continuing resolution to provide a long term solution.
