Do Home Buyers Associate Your Brand with Quality?

Filed in Sponsored Content by on November 19, 2018 3 Comments

In today’s competitive home building environment, brand reputation matters more than ever before. Quality issues could result in negative online reviews or the home buyer sharing their experiences with friends, family and colleagues. This could have a detrimental impact on your brand and profits. A recent study shows that just a few negative comments online could result in a loss of 70% of potential new customers.

By investing in a quality assurance (QA) program, you could protect your brand from potentially negative reviews and enhance your reputation, while saving money. A recent study of nearly two dozen production builders concluded that the average builder could save $7,200 per house by investing about $1,200 up front per house – a 6:1 ROI.

Here are six keys to an effective QA program:

  1. Survey existing buyers to identify problems that need to be addressed. You may find the same recurring issue, which is an indication of an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.
  2. Conduct site inspections. In addition to the standard items included during inspection, a comprehensive checklist should include issues uncovered by home buyer surveys.
  3. Identify a solution. Once problems have been identified, take steps to figure out how to solve them. Have the QA manager meet with everyone involved including design, purchasing and trades.
  4. Train your trade contractors. Meetings with your contractors and site inspections could uncover answers to specific issues related to training. Education with installers conducted by your QA manager could solve this issue.
  5. Develop better plans and specs. Detailed documentation makes it possible to spot problems and communicate requirements. Every aspect of the home should be detailed.
  6. Ask for help. There are resources available to assist with best practices for installers and processes.

Of course, all of this is easier said than done. Many builders find that franchising gave them the answers needed to manage an effective QA program. A great example is Pat McKee, owner of McKee Homes. As an Epcon Franchise Builder, McKee has access to the home builder’s proprietary QualityMark® program, which inspects homes prior to close and provides the builder with a list of items needing corrected. With these items being called to attention and fixed, the buyer receives a defect-free home. And with a happy buyer, comes positive association with your brand.

Brand reputation is important to every home builder and today’s competitive housing market is no exception. By taking steps to develop, implement and maintain a QA program, you can help protect your brand’s name in the markets you build.
