Kim Hefner-Hines, NAHB Associate of the Year for 2017.

At various stages in her life, Kim Hefner-Hines had the good fortune of being guided by three “unbelievable” mentors, she says.

She acknowledges the role that each played in her career, so much so that Hefner-Hines now makes it her mission to mentor the next generation of NAHB leaders.

Now the VP and General Manager of Allen Homes, owner of H & H Design Consultants, and president of the HBA of the Sioux Empire, Hefner-Hines uses her past experiences to focus NAHB and HBA growth on young professionals and associates.

The reigning NAHB Associate of the Year began her career working part time at a hardware store in Sioux Falls, S.D. during high school and college. While there, she fell in love with home building and took an accounting job at a local builder after college. Her first mentor saw promise and moved her over to a design and decorating role in the company.

“I will be forever grateful for his confidence in me,” she said.

Hefner-Hines would like to see all veteran NAHB members exhibit the same confidence in younger members that she was shown years ago.

“Without mentoring, our Federation would become stagnant and not survive,” she said. “We should all learn to take a young person under our belt and teach them why NAHB and our local HBAs are so important.”

Hefner-Hines believes in the next generation so much that she headed an NAHB task force that ultimately culminated in the launch of the NAHB Young Professionals Committee in 2015, one of the defining moments of her career.

“Our task force saw a dire need for input from and interaction with the youth in our industry,” she noted. “Those individuals get involved at every level of our Federation and are made up of builders AND associates working hand in hand.”

Above all else, Hefner-Hines has advocated for a strong presence for Associate members of NAHB. She has seen NAHB membership from both the Builder and Associate side, working as a mortgage banker, a design firm owner and serving as the NAHB Associate Committee chair in 2014.

“As a longtime Associate, I know that we bring fresh ideas to builders on how to grow our association and businesses,” said Hefner-Hines. “Associates know the issues, they stand shoulder to shoulder with builders, and they work tirelessly for builders.”

Associate Member Appreciation Month, running all September, is the perfect time to choose a young associate member, or potential member, to mentor. Or maybe you have an idea about who the 2018 Associate of the Year should be: applications are being accepted through Sept. 30. Nominate someone, or yourself, today.

Associate members are a vital component of the association. As Hefner-Hines says, “Associates are rock stars at NAHB!”
