Remodeler Goes from Office Manager to Company President

As an undergrad, Julie Palmer was a history major. But throughout her professional career, she has worked her way up to become president of Charlie Allen Renovations in Cambridge, Mass. — proving that the best remodelers don’t always have an extensive construction background.

Julie Palmer is January’s Remodeler of the Month.

“I answered an ad in the newspaper for an office manager [because] the company’s focus on period homes appealed to me,” Palmer said. “Gradually, as the company grew, so did my responsibilities. And in 2015, I became president of the company.”

Palmer’s unique background and strong work ethic has led her to become the January 2018 NAHB Remodeler of the Month.

Most of the homes in Cambridge are over 100 years old. So Palmer’s company always works closely with clients to create designs that retain each home’s original character, while seamlessly integrating modern amenities. They will frequently bring innovative products to the jobsite to help the client better understand the project — an approach that has proved invaluable over the years.

“We know how to recreate original details on the exterior of a house, so when we’re using new modern materials like composite lumber, the new material blends with the old wood,” Palmer said. “We understand how things were built hundreds of years ago and are familiar with the challenges and joys of working on — and living in — a house that has been around for so long.”

While Charlie Allen Renovations has done well since it was founded more than 30 years ago, Palmer aims to continue increasing the company’s footprint throughout the Boston area. While Houzz, Facebook, and other social media platforms are useful, the No. 1 source of leads continues to be client referrals.

“[Former clients invite] people into their homes, where they have a chance to see and experience our work firsthand,” Pamer said. “There simply is no better recommendation than a former client.”
