Hitting the ‘Reset Button’ and Finding Success

Re-locating and re-starting a remodeling business is far from easy. An industry pro who knows this as well as anyone is October’s Remodeler of the Month, Kevin Vick, CGR, CAPS, CGP, of Vick Construction and Remodeling in Sugar Land, Texas.

Kevin Vick, president and CEO of Vick Construction and Remodeling, is October’s Remodeler of the Month.

Vick’s remodeling company in Florida was “decimated” by the recession, so he moved back to his hometown of Houston where he hit the “reset button.” At the top of his to-do list: Join his local HBA, the Greater Houston Builders Association, which gave him access to countless networking and professional development opportunities.

“I am part of an organization of professionals who believe that improving our skills and growing professionally means we can serve our clients better and build superior projects for them,” said Vick, who currently serves as president of the GHBA Remodelers Council. “We’re competitors, but we’re [also] willing to share ideas and secrets of the trade. It is a beautiful thing to see, and our local industry is elevated to a higher standard because of it.”

That support system doesn’t just apply to helping other builders’ and remodelers’ businesses succeed, but also to helping members of the surrounding community. Vick had rebuilt his business, and now he’s engaged in efforts to help rebuild his city in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.

“For those of us working in the Houston area, our main focus right now is serving our [existing] clientele in addition to those who have had their homes damaged or destroyed,” Vick said. “[The recovery process] is not really a business opportunity, but a service opportunity to help those in need.”
