As NAHB’s Professional Women in Building (PWB) Week draws to a close, we take a look ahead to the future and the young women who will one day help lead our industry.

PWB, in partnership with NAHB Student Chapters and the Young Professionals Committee, is helping to develop the next generation of female leaders. Through mentoring and scholarship programs, emerging leaders are receiving the support they need to follow their dreams and make an impact in our industry. Here are just a few examples of these rising stars in action.

The first all-female student team challenged their peers during the prestigious NAHB Student Competition at the 2017 International Builders’ Show.

“The team’s focus, dedication to detail, and the completion of the competition problem statement ahead of schedule was extraordinary and set this particular team ahead of any team I have had in my 35 years of teaching high school and college-level students,” said team coach Scott Thomas. While two of the students started college this fall, the other team members are returning to the 2018 competition. Read their story.

You can also find inspiration in the latest issue of PWB’s Building Women magazine, which focuses on strategic career planning and provides tips and insight from women in all stages of their careers.

The magazine also profiles Tracy Young, 33, co-founder and CEO of PlanGrid, the most downloaded construction app in the world. Yet, when Young told family and and friends about her plan to study construction management, no one supported her.

“They want you to be happy, and they don’t want you to have a hard time going into the industry because the social norm is that construction is for men. But the 19-year-old in me didn’t want to be told what to do,” Young said. Today, her five-year old company has more than 300 employees and over $60 million in investment funding.

Do you know an aspiring leader in our industry? NAHB will recognize the impact of young professionals throughout the Federation with the recently launched One to Watch award program. The deadline to nominate a PWB member is is Sept. 30.
