Diana Lucero, CGA, CGP, CAPS is vice president of construction lending at New Mexico Bank & Trust and this year’s NAHB Associate of the Year. In her professional role and her involvement with her local and state HBA in New Mexico, and as former chair of the NAHB Associates Committee, Lucero supports home building in a very powerful way.

This month, for Associates Appreciation Month, we honor Diana and encourage you to nominate a colleague or apply for the Associate Member Awards. Plus, you’ll find a host of information about our valued Associates on NAHB’s website.

We connected with Lucero recently to reflect on her contributions to home building and learn what she loves most about being a part of the industry.

What are you most proud of in your career?
I love all that I have been able to experience in banking. I started in banking as a teller. I then became loan accountant and then secretary to the board. I soon realized I wanted to be on the loan side. After years of consumer, commercial, SBA and construction lending, my portfolio was growing at a rapid pace and they asked me to choose between commercial and construction lending. I chose construction lending. It is a wonderful feeling to be part of helping people to experience the American dream of home ownership. I lend to production builders, custom builders, and directly to consumers for their custom home and or remodel. I help our developers by financing A & D.

What are you most proud of in your involvement with NAHB and your HBA?
I am proud of being part of such a great team that has their primary focus on our industry. No matter what the issue, the troops are there to work together. Everyone is included and needed. This awesome group puts in hours and hours of volunteer time to help further our industry. They all have families and careers and still find the time to do what needs to be done.

What has been the most rewarding part of being an Associate member and leader with NAHB and your HBA?
So hard to come up with the most rewarding part. Probably the most rewarding is the people you get to meet. I now have local, state and national HBA families. My life would not be the same without them. We work side by side and have developed great friendships. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to be part of and chair some great committees. From local membership to organizing a successful Parade of Home to working with Associates from across the country, it is very rewarding. It has been a huge honor to become a Life Director at the state and national levels. The opportunities for growth, education and leadership are endless.

Why are Associate members an important part of the NAHB/HBA and home building industry fabric?
The Associate members are like a building block. We cannot do what we do without our builders and remodelers and they without us. We are joined together to make each other successful. In addition to the financing, supplies and labor that we provide to each individual project, we are here to support and fight right alongside one another. We want our builders and remodelers to succeed. We all want the same end result. We want to give as many opportunities for folks to own their own home as we can.
