green developmentReal estate brokerage Redfin has published a report of the top 10 green neighborhoods nationwide.

Leading the list is Villanova, Pa., near Philadelphia, followed by Villages of Irvine, Calif., and downtown Santa Monica, Calif. Five of the 10 most sustainable neighborhoods are in California.

To come up with the rankings, Redfin analyzed listings for homes in its markets that mentioned one or more green features, such as “solar” or “Energy Star.” The 10 neighborhoods with the highest percentage of green homes earned a spot on the list.

In encouraging news for production builders, the report found that homes with green features sold for almost $34,000 more than the median sale price of all houses included in the analysis.

Remodelers take note: The study emphasized that some older homes may be easily retrofitted with energy-efficient features. This is because older practices, such as stone and brick construction, provide a solid foundation for green upgrades.
