July’s Remodeler of the Month: Follow Your Instincts

Sean Beliveau, the NAHB Remodeler of the Month for July, quit his corporate job to pursue a more fulfilling career in home remodeling.

Resigning from a corporate career and starting your own business can be a difficult and scary proposition. It can also be very rewarding, if you have a quality product and strong work ethic.

That’s how the NAHB Remodeler of the Month for July, Sean Beliveau, CGP, CAPS, owner of Slate Creek Builders in Blacksburg, Va., got his start in the industry. He’d been working in the corporate world for several years, but after concluding his job was negatively affecting his personal and professional life, he resigned — on his 40th birthday.

Beliveau decided to follow his instincts and start his own remodeling company. Being the son and grandson of construction managers, Beliveau had already learned basic carpentry skills as a teenager. And he had even built his own 5,000-square-foot home in his spare time before starting his company.

Beliveau says he owes much of his recent success to his involvement with NAHB’s 20 Clubs.

“[My membership in the 20 Clubs] has taken me out of my comfort zone of being on the construction site, and into profit-and-loss reports and balance sheets,” Beliveau said. “It’s a totally different perspective, but being able to think and plan one, three, five, 10 years down the road and to better recognize new opportunities…is very motivating and exciting.”

He says the best things about starting his own business have been the experience of becoming more involved in his surrounding community of home builders and remodelers, and the satisfaction he feels of being his own boss.
