John Gillette, owner of Craftsmanship by John in Houston, built his business up from a one-man shop to a 27-person firm by following a key piece of advice: Don’t put off for tomorrow something that can be done today.
For more than 25 years, Gillette has maintained that get-‘er-done attitude, which is why he is being recognized as the NAHB Remodeler of the Month for February.
Gillette says he’s focused on staying relevant with the latest technology and focusing on having a refined marketing strategy. The NAHB designations he’s earned have also been a big component in helping Gillette keep up with the times.
“[Certifications] help me provide better customer service and to stay up-to-date with important issues in the industry that may affect our company and our clients,” he said in a recent Q&A for Qualified Remodeler.
Not only does continuing education boost his business, but using and taking advantage of the latest technology has helped improve his business revenues and customer service.
“We use tablets in the field, which allows us to communicate quickly. They are a great help with keeping everyone on track,” he said. “Also, 3-D design software allows our clients to visualize their projects during the planning phase. This is a great benefit as the client can make and see changes while the project planning is in process.”
Above all, Gillette says his marketing team has been the key to growing the business before, during and after the recession.
In good times and bad times, he says, having a quality staff has helped the company build a solid reputation. It all starts by hiring the right employees who produce excellent work.
