Winning Big to Support the Future of Home Building

In the past three years, the NAHB Professional Women in Building Council (PWB) has awarded more than $26,000 to local high school and college students pursuing education and careers within the building industry.Student standing in a woodwork class drilling a frame and wearing protective clothes

State and local PWB councils receive funding designated for scholarships when they participate in the national council’s awards programs and membership competitions.

Winning councils use these scholarships to support the education needs of current and future members of the industry — allocating money to select scholarship recipients, schools and training programs.

For example, the PWB council at the BIA of Southeastern Michigan provides financial aid to students in the construction trades program at Dakota High School. Each year, the council donates $1,000 to match funds the students raise to attend IBS.

Individual members honored through the program can also receive scholarship funds that will impact their communities. Earlier this year, Carole Jones, NAHB PWB immediate past president, received a national award for being a top member recruiter, and she donated $300 of that award to the BIA of Southeastern Michigan fund as well.Chalk Board Series

The Atlanta Council of Professional Women in Building used the national award money it received in 2014 to present a $500 scholarship to a Mercer University student majoring in engineering. In 2015, the council was able to support two scholarships.

Scholarships are issued from the Building Hope Scholarship Fund, named in memory of Hope S. Bettilyon, the first president of the national council.

Today, the fund is thriving and is responsible for supporting decades of women in the building industry and trades. Donations are provided by PWB members and corporate sponsors like Insinkerator.

Councils and individuals can apply for awards in categories that recognize and honor excellence in areas such as community service programs, membership recruitment and retention projects, legislative participation, and member benefits and services. Learn more about the Building Hope Scholarship Fund and other programs at nahb.org/pwbawards.
