Associates & BUILD-PAC: Spreading the Word

hammerThe Associates Committee kicked off 2016 with an important mission: Increase Associate member participation in BUILD-PAC, NAHB’s bipartisan federal political action committee, across all 50 states.

The committee represents those NAHB members who provide products and services to home builders, developers and remodelers. These bankers, brokers, roofers and product reps understand that the stronger their impact in BUILD-PAC, the better they serve their builder clients. They understand that BUILD-PAC allows NAHB to be on the front lines of many national legislative issues that affect not just builders, but every Associate member no matter where they live.

Diana Lucero, Chair of the Associates Advocacy Subcommittee, is a New Mexico mortgage lender who gets donation requests from her own professional association – but she gives to BUILD-PAC. “I wouldn’t have the career I love so much if we weren’t building homes,” she said. “The number of jobs affected by home building is amazing.”

During the Great Recession, Lucero saw suppliers, title company employees and many other workers in construction-affiliated industries lose traction as home building faltered and then practically flat-lined in her market. “Everyone was struggling, and we watched some really good folks go under. We need to be building homes to keep everyone moving. If we aren’t building new homes, existing home sales go away, too.”

Associates Advocacy Subcommittee Chair Linda Mosier-Vaudt, a Washington state financial advisor, agrees. “I’ve watched BUILD-PAC grow over the years and been involved since the 1980s,” she said. “NAHB’s lobbyists are very effective, and they truly make changes that help protect the housing and building industry. And because the building industry affects the financial world, it’s very important that we support the association that can most effectively boost our industry. That association is NAHB.”

Already this year, Associates have increased their BUILD-PAC participation by 14% — and their momentum is growing. “Yes, it means taking money out of your pocket, but if you truly understand the true reason for our association, which is home industry defense, you’ll understand that money can come back to you in multiples,” said Mike Kurpiel, Associate BUILD-PAC Vice Chair.
