Building productive relationships with federal lawmakers is doesn’t always require an “ask” from builders to their members of Congress.

As part of Bringing Housing Home™ week, members of the BIA of San Diego County took the opportunity to reaffirm their strong ties with Rep. Juan Vargas (D-Calif.) during a 90-minute breakfast meeting.

“This was a reunion of old friends and gave us a chance to deepen our relationship with our local congressman,” said Matthew Adams, BIA vice president. “Though we didn’t get too deep in the legislative weeds, Juan is generally very supportive of our issues and said point blank he is a housing advocate.”

While it is also important to meet with lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Adams said the in-district meetings allow builders more time to spend with their lawmakers in a less formal setting.

“This was a terrific morning and we had a great meeting, particularly from a relationship-building perspective,” said Adams.
