80407780At NAHB’s request, Reps. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.) and Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) sent a letter on Dec. 1 to Washington State Office of Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler voicing their strong support for association health plans.

By allowing small businesses to leverage their purchasing power to buy high quality and affordable health insurance in the large group market, association health plans provide small businesses and their employees the same opportunities to health care coverage as large corporations and help contain health care costs.

While small employers with fewer than 50 full-time workers are not mandated to offer health coverage, many of them do so voluntarily through association health plans.

The BIA of Washington and the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties are among home builders associations that offer such health plans.

In their letter to the Washington insurance commissioner, Reps. Herrera and Kilmer said: “We are encouraged that the continued importance of association health plans has been reinforced in recent rulings and settlement orders which underscore the viability and need for this valued option for small employers and families.”

NAHB has been a long-time proponent of association health plans and continues to work with Congress to ensure that this market-based health care option remains a viable alternative for small businesses and their workers.
