When he first got involved with his local HBA, Kevin Katner, of KatFish Home Improvement in New Orleans, La., didn’t realize his membership benefits extended far beyond city and state limits.

As the 2015 chair of the HBA of Greater New Orleans, Katner was able to take advantage of an opportunity at the national level as he applied for and received the NAHB Remodelers Leadership Scholarship.

The scholarship opens the door to more educational opportunities for local remodelers council leaders by enabling them to attend an NAHB Board of Directors meeting.

Katner was awarded the $1,500 scholarship to attend the 2015 NAHB Spring Board of Directors meeting in Washington, D.C. where he was mentored by NAHB Remodelers national leadership. He learned about the most current remodeling industry issues and took home best practices for running a successful local council.

Katner assumed that in an industry like home building, making connections with other members would take a while. He was pleasantly surprised to discover just how welcoming and collaborative the meeting attendees were, especially toward him and the other scholarship recipients.

“This was a great opportunity to learn from industry leaders from around the country,” Katner said. “I learned about the educational programs and other benefits that NAHB provides its members, which is very important information to take back and share with my local members.”

Current local council chairs and vice chairs are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Recipients are awarded $1,500 to help defray costs of attending the NAHB Remodelers Board of Trustees and subcommittee meetings at the 2016 International Builders’ Show in Las Vegas.

The application period for the 2016 NAHB Remodelers Leadership Scholarship is open until Monday, Nov. 16.
