160454737 (2)When is a new green home not exactly a home? When it’s a Maryland rescue squad building in the process of being certified to the ICC 700 National Green Building Standard – and in that case, it’s treated as a house “with an exceptionally large garage,” according to the Home Innovation Research Labs.

In late July, the Home Innovation Labs, which administer the NGBS verification and certification program for new homes, remodeling projects and residential developments, wrote a blog post about the “non-traditional” projects it also certifies.

Many builders don’t know that NGBS can also be used to certify student housing projects, shelters for homeless families, homes in military installations and other buildings that most people think of as commercial projects.

The blog post reinforces the notion that NGBS is a pretty flexible tool. You can read more on its website, and also follow the progress of the next iteration of the standard as it moves toward its 2015 unveiling : NAHB and the International Code Council are working with ASHRAE to develop the new document.
